Earlier today the US Department of Transportation announced a $15 million grant to the Alameda County Transportation Commission (Alameda CTC) to improve safety along San Pablo Avenue. The grant will help reduce pedestrian and bicycle collisions along San Pablo, one of the most dangerous roads for bicyclists and pedestrians in Alameda County, and improve the quality of bus service on this key transit corridor.
“Safety is a top priority for the Alameda County Transportation Commission and improving options for active transportation users including bicyclists and pedestrians is one of the Commission’s key goals. The San Pablo corridor is a primary artery for many low-income communities and communities of color in Alameda County and this grant will further Alameda CTC’s commitment to making our transportation network more equitable while also advancing efforts to reach our climate goals,” remarked Alameda CTC Chair, Emeryville Mayor John J. Bauters.
The grant will help improve San Pablo Avenue safety by constructing safety enhancements on and across San Pablo Avenue to improve bicycle and pedestrian crossings, improve transit speed and reliability and improve waiting areas for riders by installing bus bulbs and bus stop enhancements, and provide all ages and abilities bicycle routes along parallel streets east and west of San Pablo Avenue.
