I-680 Express Lanes From SR-84 to Alcosta Boulevard

The I-680 Express Lanes from SR-84 to Alcosta Boulevard Project will close the gap between existing express lane projects directly to the north and south. The project extends for approximately 9 miles on northbound and southbound I-680 through Sunol, Pleasanton, Dublin and San Ramon.

Project benefits include:

  • Increased efficiency of the transportation system between SR-84 and Alcosta Boulevard to accommodate current and future traffic demand
  • Improved travel time and travel reliability for all users, including HOV and transit users
  • Optimized freeway system management and traffic operations

Phase 1

Design and construction of this project is planned into two phases: southbound (Phase 1) and northbound (Phase 2). Phase 1 is combined with Caltrans pavement rehabilitation project within the same limits for the construction phase. Construction work for Phase 1 and Caltrans pavement rehabilitation started in February 2023. Phase 2 final design and construction will be implemented at a future date yet to be determined.

For additional information on Phase 1, see Phase 1 fact sheet on the Fact Sheets tab above.

Please note that the approved Environmental Document is for the overall project (Phase 1 and Phase 2).
